Celebrating Cycling Culture
Maats is all about celebrating cycling culture on and off the bike. The store proves that there is a lot of love for cycling apparel and brings a community together with their coffee and rides. The state of the industry shows a few leading brands, but in Amsterdam we noticed the opportunity to create even more bespoke apparel. Being day in day out surrounded by cycling fanatics, have the chance to feel all the materials and fully understanding our community, we wanted to create something ourselves that elevates the Maats brand in a new and exciting cultural space.
Maats Creative Lab
The idea for a limited capsule collection started in the midst of the pandemic. Joost reached out to Tom Sibma, a fellow Maats rider who works as a creative in Amsterdam. After some flirting in the store and brainstorming during a ride, the two constructed a team with Dominic Baggott (UK) who works as a textile designer in sportswear. In a period of two weeks, working from the office on moodboards and ideas, together with Dominic over numerous video calls, they created the first direction of the collection based on a shimmering bike ride. It’s the start of Maats Creative Lab, a creative studio that explores cycling culture through products.
Discovering LSD Effects
While researching plant medicines at Sandoz Chemicals in 1943, Albert Hofmann accidentally absorbed a small amount of purified acid through his fingertips and discovered the powerful effects of LSD as he rode home on a bike.
We celebrate this cultural phenomenon with our latest “Trace of Effect” capsule collection, where we explore the cycling as a spiritual practice and it’s connection with psychedelics.

Brand Logo & Inspiration
“We also tweaked the original Maats logo with a scanner, because Albert Hoffman explained that you can never hallucinate on LSD. It’s just your perception that gets distorted during an LSD trip. You can never see things that do not exist, only real things which transform.”, concludes Tom.
Vivid Jersey Inspiration
“Based on Albert Hoffman’s personal archives and books, we came up with the design of the Vivid Jersey”, says Tom. Hoffman wrote about this bike trip in his personal diary; ‘I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colours’. “Based on this observation, we scanned an old dusty book called ‘Observations from LSD Therapy’ and blew up these interesting visuals on a race-fit piece.“
Gilet Inspiration
The Fingerprint Gilet explains itself already. The absorption through his fingertips inspired us to create a pattern based on Hofmann’s fingerprint itself. It resulted in one of the most outstanding pieces of the collection.

Vivid Jersey
Based on Albert Hoffman’s personal archives and books, we came up with the design of the Vivid Jersey. He wrote about this bike trip in his personal diary; “I perceived an uninterrupted stream of fantastic pictures, extraordinary shapes with intense, kaleidoscopic play of colours.” Based on this observation, we scanned an old dusty book called ‘Observations from LSD Therapy’ and blew up these interesting visuals on a race-fit piece.

Pristine Jersey
The Pristine Jersey has a monochrome look featuring an off-white/grey-ish colour. The minimalistic design on the front and back have reflective properties.

Bib Short Deep Purple
The Trace Of Effect Bibs are made from predominantly recycled fabrics and feature an amazing Performance Space pad made by Elastic Interface made for the longest rides.

* Laser cut hem is finished with an internally printed silicon gripper
