Maats Winter Essentials Guide

Shorter days, cooler temperatures, more wind and rain. But also fantastic colours, less people on the road and for many riders the switch from road to unpaved. Winter is a super interesting but also challenging season for cyclists. In this guide we tell you how you can arm yourself as best as possible against the changing elements.

How to dress for winter cycling

Layers

In autumn the weather is unpredictable and can change quickly while riding. So go out with an outfit that consists of several layers so that you can quickly adapt to changing circumstances.

Visibility

With shorter days and the nights drawing in, it’s even more important to make sure you’re visible. Therefore choose products that have reflective characteristics so that you are clearly visible when it gets dark.

Protection

In the fall you will have to deal with more wind and rain. That is why it is smart to go out with products that can protect you against wind and water. It is important to choose apparel that is protective but also breathable.

Base Layer

Baselayers may not be visible to others most of the time, but don't underestimate the best cycling baselayers. These humble undergarments should form the foundation of your cycling kit when you're choosing what to wear when you go on a ride. They not only offer an extra layer of warmth but they are also regulating your body temperature and managing moisture build-up to keep you feeling fresh throughout your ride.

Outer Layer

The outer layer is the final layer of clothing that protects you from the elements. This layer includes a jacket and a gilet. A jacket is an essential piece of winter cycling clothing, as it will protect you from the wind and cold. Look for a jacket that is both windproof and waterproof, and made of a breathable fabric to keep you comfortable.

Jackets

While your legs are spinning and nice and warm, your torso and arms spend a lot of the time pretty static on the bike. Keeping them warm by wearing a good jacket is paramount, not only for your riding enjoyment, but as the key controllers of your bike, in keeping you safe too. In autumn the shorter days and longer nights will mean that at some point you're probably going to be riding in the dark, or at least lower light levels, so cycling jackets often come with reflective details.

Gilets

Handy to stow in a back pocket, or to add an extra layer either at the start or during a ride, a gilet is a great go-to item for changeable days. Adding some extra warmth and rain protection without the bulk of a jacket, these gilets will pack up to pocket size and remain with arms reach in case the weather changes again.

Bib Tights

When the colder months are upon us, dedicated autumn and winter bib tights are essential. Vital for keeping your lower half warm, the best bib tights will also ensure that your lower back and midriff are also kept out of the cold. Furthermore, they come with integrated chamois to keep you comfortable on your bike.

Accessories

Accessories to beat the autumn chill. Add a pair of knee warmers and arm warmers to a short sleeve jersey and bib shorts combo, and you have a good outfit for tackling the autumn weather. The warmers will keep the chill off your hardworking knees and not-so-hardworking elbows. Keeping your hands protected from the cold and rain is also very important. Autumn is the time to pull out the long finger gloves.
