The Maats Sprinter is ready to rumble for the second season of Local Loops! This summer we're driving the van to various cities in The Netherlands and organize Maats Local Loops. We started with this concept in the summer of 2023 and hosted rides in several cities around the country. This summer we visit Den Haag, Arnhem and Haarlem.

• We gather on Sunday morning 09:30h at a near the centrum of Arnhem (t.b.c.) for coffee from our van
• As of 10:00h we ride a between 80km and 100km road ride in the region, created by local legends
• Midway the Maats Sprinter will treat us again to coffee, cold drinks and a snack during a short break
• After finishing, we go to a local brewery and have some drinks!

Local Legends

Who better to ask to create a local route than a Local Legend? We have a few friends that comes from Arnhem or live there and would like to show us around. They help us out with creating the perfect route, tell us where to stop for coffee and know where you can best finish your ride for cold beers and snacks. We will tell you more about these local legends when the date comes closer.

This year it’s 5 years ago that we opened our store at the van Woustraat in Amsterdam. To celebrate this, we are organizing a series of amazing events this summer. These are events that are in line with the things we have done with Maats in recent years or events that we have wanted to organize for a long time and for which this is the perfect reason.

Dropping - Saturday Oct 14

This is a new event based on a typical Dutch concept: a dropping. Imagine a departure in the early morning hours with a touring car to an unknown destination somewhere in the Netherlands. There are two pickup locations: Amsterdam & Utrecht. When you arrive at the location, your bike will be waiting for you and you will receive the location of the first checkpoint.

Once you’ve reached the first checkpoint, the location of the next one will be revealed, and so on. Five checkpoints later and about 150km further you will arrive back at our Amsterdam store where we will draw up the results. This event is not just about speed; route skills, navigation and the ability to improvise will play important roles. Eternal glory awaits at the finish line...

Ride with the Albion crew and celebrate the launch weekend

Following Friday night’s film screening, we’re continuing the celebration of Albion’s launch at Maats with a special social ride from our Utrecht store on Saturday 17 May.

Join the Albion team and ambassadors for an 80 km mixed terrain group ride through the scenic routes of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Expect a relaxed pace, a mix of tarmac and gravel, and the kind of ride that perfectly reflects Albion’s spirit of adventure.

Alba Optics x Maats: WEEKENDER

As you may know, Maats is home to independent, unique brands within cycling and Alba Optics is one of them. Its story began with the search for an original mould as their goal was to find a frame that was designed and produced in Italy during the 80s and bring it to life using new technologies, resulting in their first model: the Delta. 

Alba Optics always believed in a different type of activity, one that does not speak of performance and results but speaks of the quality of life. Their goal is not to finish first, but to get wherever you want, in any condition. And Maats fully supports this idea. 

Maats and Alba Optics have been partners for years and we thought now is a perfect moment to celebrate our partnership. We proudly announce that Pier Giorgio, one of the founders, will come to the Netherlands to celebrate our partnership with a ride in both Amsterdam and Rotterdam with some drinks after!

Previously, Mondays at Maats were always dedicated to a bike ride with the crew since our shops are closed and for most people the new work week starts. Out of love for cycling we always wanted to spend this day well by going for a nice loop: Maats Monday was born. 

Last year, we organized the very first official Maats Monday for our community in Limburg, which was a huge success. It was a beautiful and unforgettable day on the bike with a big group of our community.
That left us wanting more! So this year, we’re heading to the heart of Belgian cycling for the second edition, which will be a Member Exclusive Event: Maats Monday: Flanders! 

On Monday, April 14th, we start in Oudenaarde, which is the beating heart of the Flanders region. Expect an epic ride over the legendary climbs and cobbles of the Tour of Flanders.
Want to be well-rested at the start? There is an option to book a hotel room at Hotel Leopold in Oudenaarde for the night of Sunday, April 13th to Monday, April 14th. Costs for a hotel room is €125 (single) or €145 (double), breakfast included.

Pizza Season is back! 

Maats Pizza Rides have always been a staple in our events, and we also would like to introduce this tradition for our newest store in Rotterdam! We organize a Pizza Ride in Rotterdam every 3 weeks. We invite you to this open group ride of about 45-55k, after which you can enjoy a delicious pizza and an ice cold beer on your return.

Maats loves to ride, sharing time together on the bike to connect, to meet new people and catch up with friends. Maats invites you to join our Utrecht community rides!

What is our Advanced Ride? 

This ride is meant for more experienced riders, who are comfortable with maintaining a faster pace.

• Faster pace, average speed: 30-32 km/h
• Cruising speed (on longer straight segments): ~34-35 km/h
• Route length varies between 70-80 km
• This ride type is a bit more challenging, but still meant as a community ride where a no drop policy applies.
  
• Ride leaders will still lead the ride but do not ride at the front all the time - all riders can take turns to ride at the front position. 

If someone is struggling, we'll bring the pace down a little bit. If some people have to wait at a traffic sign, we all wait at the other side of the street. In Dutch there is a saying: “Samen uit, samen thuis”, which means we’ll stick together and leave no one behind, from departure till arrival. 

General Rules

• Helmet & click pedals are mandatory
• Make sure you're aware of the signaling on the bike (voor, tegen, paaltje etc.)
• Respect the indicated pace 

• Respect traffic rules

What is the level? What do we expect from you? 

Although we love all cyclists, Maats Rides might be unsuitable for absolute beginners. If you register for our rides, we expect you to be able to ride continuously (no breaks) for a minimum of 2+ hours on the indicated paces. Experience with group rides is a plus but not a requirement.

Routes:

The routebook for our rides consists of approx. eight fixed routes that are well planned and recon'ed from time to time. Route lengths vary from 70-80km. Routes are designed for variety, safety and an optimal riding experience with groups. Routes will not be adjusted midway unless there are construction works etc. This will always happen in consultation with the ride leader.

How to join: 

By scanning or clicking the below QR-code, you will enter the Maats Utrecht Community Ride Whatsapp group, where all weekly rides will be announced. In this group, you can indicate if you want to join a ride by responding to a poll. This poll will be posted a couple of days before the ride. After that, all further details will be shared in this group, such as a GPX file, a route link to Komoot, who are your ride leaders, etc.

These are events that are in line with the things we have done with Maats in recent years or events that we have wanted to organize for a long time and for which this is the perfect reason. Midsummer Race - Friday June 30

When you think of bike races you automatically come to club races. Individual, performance driven and straight home after the race. We think it would be cool to make a combination between racing and also a bit of community and fun. That is why we organize a Midsummer race on friday evening, followed by a bbq and some drinks with friends. 

We gather at 19:00 at sports park de Weren in Amsterdam Noord. After a short ride briefing, we ride as a group for a warm-up period for 30 minutes. After ringing the bell, we ride a race of 60 minutes for the men and 45 minutes for the women (combined in one race). Afterwards prize ceremony, beers and burgers from the Maats Bus.

Don't feel like racing but want to watch and cheer on the riders? Buy a Spectator ticket for cheering and the bbq.

For who is this race? For all Maats customers/community members who like to race and test themselves on a closed circuit, with or without race experience.

This year, we're taking things to the next level with a full weekend experience. Jimbo and Andreas from PNS will be bringing the ICC bus to the Netherlands for a weekend packed with rides and challenges.

On Sunday, June 29th, we’ll wrap up the Midsummer weekend with a shake-out ride. You can start from any of our three stores, and the routes will converge halfway for a mid-ride coffee stop at a central meeting point. Each route will be approximately 55–65 kilometers.

To celebrate the arrival in Rotterdam, we teamed up (again) with resident artist Roel van Eekelen who designed the iconic Maats Rotterdam Festive t-shirt! This Thursday night we'll not only ride together with Roel, but you'll also have the possibility to grab one of these exclusive shirts in our store! On top of that, Roel will reveal his matching festive decoration on the shop's front window. So much to celebrate!
