Layer up!

Tough cookies keep on cycling in winter, also when temperatures drop to as low as below zero degrees. What to wear to keep you warm enough? Let's cut straight through to the answer: it's all about layering. With your core kept warm, you unlock the secret to riding comfortably in the harshest of weather. At Maats, we advise to adhere to ''The Three Layer Principle'', consisting of:

#1: The baselayer

This is the first and arguably most key component to keeping you warm. Various options of thermal fabrics allow you to make the right choice for the temperature you're defying that day. For instance, pick merino wool for its perfect temperature regulation capacities, or choose Polartec for state-of-the-art heat technology. Wear a snug fit to make sure the top layers won't look wrinkly.

#2: The longsleeve jersey

This middle piece may seem excessive, but let us tell you: it isn't. The longsleeve jersey is the ideal inbetween layer to add a level of temperature regulation, combined with the practical function of its pockets (as both layer #1 and #3 typically don't have these). Longsleeve jerseys come in variations from thin textiles to thermal fleece-lined fabrics. Choose what you feel aligns best with the outside temperature.

#3: The gilet or jacket

Lastly, wear a gilet or jacket over all of the above. A gilet keeps your core warm yet ventilates through your armpits, whereas a jacket's sleeves not only keep your body warmth, but also cover your arms to cold riding wind. The great thing about this third layer is that you can wear it (partly) unzipped to cool down, or get rid of it altogether during your ride. Lightweight gilets/jackets typically can be stowed easily into a back pocket of your jersey.
Now don't think this is it: treat yourself to a thermal long bib, and take care of your extremities by adding a beanie, a neck tube, gloves, thermal socks, overshoes and what not. At Maats, we have it all! ;)

Easily the best bit of winter kit I own.

Never thought I'd get used to the cargo pocket this quickly. It always looked redundant to me, but the ease with which you can grab a bar or even your phone to snap a quick photo with your gloves still on is just incredible. Other than that, I'm a 1.90 / 86 KG guy and the L just fits like it was molded onto my frame.

Best ever bib

Very comfortable, supportive but not excessively tight. The leg grippers hold the sleeves perfectly. I am 177 and 66 kg and S is a good fit.

Gesoigneerd, maar toch geen maandhuur aan een nieuwe broek kwijt!

Niet anders verwacht na de vorige editie van deze Canvas broek, maar deze zit ook als gegoten. De broek heeft precies de juiste upgrade tov van de vorige versie; welke af en toe wel eens in de liezen kneep. Door de verstevigde pijpen gebeurt dat bij deze broek niet. Absolute must-have, voor een aardige prijs!!

I think these are my favorite bibs.

I'm 5'10'' and 150lb (178cm 68kg) and I'd say they are a perfect fit. The thing that really stands out for me is that they don't have any sewing or seams in straps, so smooth it's like I don't even know they're there.

Quality and Comfort

These Canvas Bib Shorts are comfortable and show thoughtful design. I enjoy the sticky material on the interior of the leg cuffs, that stop the shorts from sliding up during a ride. The padding at the base of the seat really helps keep me comfortable on long rides as well. The design is great and the construction is solid and durable so far. The Canvas Deep Winter Jacket 2.0 is made to protect you from challenging winter conditions. The outer hard-shell layer has a water-repellent function and is completely windproof. The inside of the jacket is lined with soft fleece that provides warmth and insulates well. For this 2.0 version we added two small side zippers for core-ventilation. When you go faster these will help to keep your body at the right temperature without losing insulation.

      Makes winter riding fun!

      This jacket has transformed my winter rides! Warm, but not sweaty warm. Good ventilation and much more waterproof than you would think (I rode almost two hours in medium rain and my base layer was dry, unlike the rest ;). Plenty of pockets and very comfortable fit. Thanks Joost for recommending ;)

      Mooi en goed winter jack van Canvas. Zowel qua pasvorm als functionaliteit prima eigenschappen. Heb er al meer dan 100km mee gereden in koude omstandigheden en bevalt goed. Ook de look en feel en afwerkingen qua details is mooi. Al met al een product wat ik zou aanraden en mooie toevoeging is om in de winter heerlijk te kunnen blijven koersen.
